The Joy of Holidays

With Halloween right around the corner, it got me thinking about what fun the holidays are in elementary school. Almost every school I worked in had a Halloween party and parade. I can remember the little ones in their costumes walking around the big lake in front of our school. The candy, cupcakes, and wrappers everywhere! We complained about the mess, but it was fun to see the kids have a good time.

In one school, we had a tradition where one half of the classes would dress as pilgrims and the other half would be Indians. We would all dine together at big tables set up outside. We were in Florida, so it wasn't really too cold to eat outside. The kids and staff would sit down to a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings.

At Christmas time, it was all about presents, crafts, and movies. There were times when we would let the kids dress in pj's and watch a holiday movie. There was hot chocolate and popcorn. Easter was a time for Mass and egg hunts. Having worked in a few Catholic schools, there were traditions of performing the passion of the Christ. These were performed by the students and some of them were pretty spectacular and amazing!

Holidays at school are fun, so as a teacher, enjoy them! These are the memories that will stay with you.
